Gynecomastia Surgery Can Help You Feel Confident While Shirtless

If you are a male with excessive breast tissue, you are not alone. Gynecomastia gives the chest a fleshy, enlarged appearance and can negatively impact your quality of life. Some men find that it prevents them from enjoying activities such as swimming and other sports where participants commonly remove their shirts. Board-certified plastic surgeon Sutton Graham and his team can perform gynecomastia surgery at our Greenville, SC, practice to help you achieve a more masculine figure by removing excess skin, fat, and breast tissue.

What Is Gynecomastia?

There are a number of reasons why men develop excessive breast tissue. One common cause is a condition called gynecomastia, which is relatively common. Other potential causes include:

  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Rapid weight gain
  • Obesity
  • Certain medical conditions
  • Excessive alcohol and marijuana consumption

Excess fat, skin, or tissues in the breast can make men feel emasculated and self-conscious about their appearance, but a male breast reduction can remove this excess tissue and reshape the chest area for a more masculine physique.

Are You Considering Gynecomastia Surgery?

A male breast reduction is ideal for patients who have not been successful in reducing the size of their breast tissue through a healthy diet and regular exercise. Candidates for male breast reduction should be in good health overall. It is also important that candidates have met their goal weight and can maintain that weight consistently, as weight gain after surgery can affect your long-term results.

Two Popular Techniques Used

There are typically two techniques used for male breast reduction. Patients with an excess of fatty tissues within the breasts may qualify for liposuction, which leaves minimal scars.

Enlarged breast tissue caused by gynecomastia can affect your quality of life, preventing you from truly enjoying yourself in social situations. But surgery can help.

Patients with excess skin and glandular tissue caused by gynecomastia may require excision to remove these tissues. Using this technique, Dr. Graham can also reposition the nipple and areola to give them a more masculine projection. Both procedures can typically be performed in one to three hours. We can also perform a targeted procedure to remove only the excess gland tissue without skin removal.

In most cases, you should expect to take one week off of work following surgery. However, chest exercises and weight lifting should be avoided for several weeks after surgery, or until cleared by Dr. Graham.

The Benefits Can Be Life-Changing

Male breast reduction can improve the way you look, feel, and live your life. Because Dr. Graham will remove excess skin, fat, and glandular tissues, he can sculpt a more masculine chest. The results are visible almost immediately after surgery.

Eliminating excess tissue can also help you appear slimmer overall, and you may find that some of your clothing fits better. As a result, you may see improvements in your confidence and self-esteem, and you may even begin to feel comfortable enough to remove your shirt in front of others.
