How Do You Choose Your Plastic Surgeon? Statistics By Dr. Sutton Graham on April 19, 2022

What do potential patients consider when choosing a plastic surgeon.  Sixty-eight percent of aesthetically concious consumers scheduled 2-3 consulatations before making their treatment decision.  54% consider the surgeon's bedside manner the most important consideration.  Long wait for the consultation appointment deters only 29% of potential patients.

Patients reported that 74% researched their provider's credentials on multiple platforms prior to getting a procedure.  Eighty percent researched the provider's degree and board certification online.  Only 3% researched credentials through social media.  You can confirm board certification through ABMS.org:  https://www.certificationmatters.org/practitioner/?pid=389379&ped=eUJlUkhnRThzR3FaZ01jVitzMEN5a3dIU0pteXFGczJ0bWtKeVRWWlZIVT0&qs=ZHNlYXJjaD0xJmZuYW1lPVN1dHRvbiZsbmFtZT1HcmFoYW0mc3RhdGU9JnNwZWNpYWx0eT0

92% of respondents said they would pay more for a board certified dermatologist or plastic srugeon, rather than a MedSpa technician.  79% considered both before and after photos and online reviews when making their decisions.  When social media was used, Instagram was the preferred platform for 49% of the patients, followed by Facebook, LinkeIn, then TikTok.  However, only 35% of patients thought the internet was their main source of information.

Text messages and e-mail were the preferred method of communication of 63% of the respondents.  46% preferred the telephone.

Breast augmentation is the number one surgical procedure since 2017.  The most important considerations were natural looking results (76%), natural feeling results (65%), procedure safety (55%), then price (50%).  What other non-surgical procedures are of interest to patients?  Neurotoxins (Botox), laser hair removal, micro-needling, laser skin resurfacing, lip filler, and finally skin tightening.  Among surgical procedures the list is: breast augmentation, facelift, liposuction, necklift, tummy tuck, fat transfer, blepharoplasty, breast reduction, and finally buttock augmentation (Brazilian Butt Lift).

Most satisfied patients tell friends and family (81%), write a positive online review (44%), allow doctor to use before & after photos online (43%), or provide an online testimonial (31%).
